What is Hair Transplant FUT?

FUT, also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation, is a popular hair transplant method used globally in conjunction with FUE. This technique may also be referred to as FUSS, MFUT, or Strip. Contrary to FUE, FUT offers a quicker process. The procedure entails the surgeon excising a small strip of skin, extracting hair from that region, and grafting it onto the target area. The incision typically measures 1.5 cm in width and heals effortlessly once sutures are in place.

How is FUE procedure conducted?

Step 1 - Hairline Design

The first step in an FUT procedure involves designing the hairline. The patient and the doctor agree on the final look of the hairline. Once agreed upon, the doctor will outline the hairline on the patient’s head and prepare for the next step.

Step 2 - Shaving

The donor area is shaved to facilitate easier graft extraction. Unlike FUE, FUT does not require extensive head shaving; instead, a small, strip-shaped area will be shaved.

Step 3 - Preparing the Recipient Area

The doctor prepares the recipient area to receive the FUT grafts using small needles ranging from 0.8 mm to 1.1 mm in diameter, equipped with depth limiters.

Step 4 - Graft Preparation

Hair strips are extracted from the donor area and handed over to a skilled team of assistants, who separate individual grafts from the strips using stereomicroscopes.

Step 5 - Graft Transportation

Grafts are placed in specially prepared petri dishes to ensure safe, clean, and viable transportation to the patient.

Step 6 - Implantation Process

A team of surgical assistants begins implanting the grafts under the head surgeon’s close supervision and involvement.

Step 7 - Post-operative Care

Upon completing the implantation process, the team cleans the patient and ensures the final appearance meets the intended goal.

Step 8 - Post-operative Consultation

After the operation, the doctor advises the patient on post-operative care, typically recommending a week of refraining from heavy physical activity and taking painkillers if necessary. The doctor also confirms the patient’s satisfaction with the final look and conducts a 360-degree review of the outcome.

Step 9 and 10 - Barely Visible Scarring Immediately and 6 Months After

Post-operation scarring on the back of the head is nearly imperceptible and becomes even less noticeable over time, rendering the FUT hair transplant procedure undetectable to untrained or casual observers.

Is FUT an Effective Hair Transplant Method?

To understand how a FUT hair transplant works, it is important to understand how it is conducted and how it works. Keep reading to find out more about how we conduct the FUT procedure at the Tsilosani Hair Transplantation Institute.

Pros of FUT Hair Transplant Surgery

R
Higher Number of Grafts

The FUT technique enables the transplantation of a greater number of grafts in a single session compared to FUE procedures.

R
Efficient Harvesting Process

Graft harvesting from the donor area is easier and more efficient in FUT than in FUE, resulting in a higher number of successful grafts. Skilled surgeons can harvest 7,000 to 12,000 grafts from the permanent donor area using FUT, compared to 3,000 to 6,000 with FUE.

R
High Survival Rate

Studies indicate that the survival rate of follicles grafted through FUT is higher than with FUE, approaching 100%.

R
Low Transection Incidence Rate

The incidence of transection for individual grafts is significantly lower with FUT, particularly when modern tools and methods, such as the open donor technique and stereomicroscopic graft preparation, are utilized by experienced surgeons. With FUT, the transection rate is 3%, meaning only three out of every 100 grafts are transected. This rate is considerably higher for FUE.

R
Fast Procedure

Well-practiced surgical teams can complete the FUT procedure in 3 to 4 hours, while FUE procedures may take much longer.

Cons of FUT Hair Transplant Surgery

O
Longer Postoperative Recovery

The recovery period following FUT is slightly longer compared to other methods. Patients may experience numbness, mild pain, and a stretching sensation in the nape area for a short period. Additionally, they may need to limit physical activity for 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery.

O
Minor Scar

The FUT hair transplant technique can result in a small scar in the donor area. However, due to the advanced methods employed at the Tsilosani Hair Transplantation Clinic, the scar is barely noticeable and entirely invisible when hair is not cut close to the head or shaved. Please refer to the provided photos for examples of such cases.

Tips for Choosing a Hair Transplant Surgeon

Selecting the right hair transplant surgeon is essential for achieving natural-looking and long-lasting results. Consider the following tips to help you find a qualified and experienced professional:

1. Examine before and after photos:

Request to see before and after images of previous patients to assess the surgeon’s skills and the quality of their results.

2. Read reviews:

Browse online reviews and testimonials from past patients to evaluate their satisfaction and experiences with the surgeon.

3. Verify their credentials

Ensure the surgeon is board-certified in hair restoration and has extensive experience performing FUE and other hair transplant techniques.

4. Schedule a consultation:

Arrange a meeting with the surgeon to discuss your goals, expectations, and any questions you may have. A competent surgeon should be able to offer personalized advice and recommendations based on your unique needs and situation.

Determining if FUT is appropriate for you

Choosing the right hair transplantation method is highly dependent on the specific needs and circumstances of each individual case. FUT is primarily intended for treating male pattern baldness and is typically most effective on the front of the head. If a large number of grafts are required or based on other factors related to the client’s needs, the surgeon may recommend the FUT procedure. Frequently Asked Questions

DOES MY HAIR FALL OUT AFTER A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

It is normal for the initial hair to fall out shortly after the transplant, so there is no need for concern. The transplanted grafts remain intact, and over the subsequent months, the hair will begin to grow back, allowing you to see the results. Once the hair has regrown, the transplanted hair is permanent and does not fall out.

By utilizing our long hair transplantation technique, you can even get a preview of the results immediately following the procedure.

HOW LONG AFTER THE HAIR TRANSPLANT WILL I START SEEING THE RESULTS?

You can anticipate seeing initial results a few months after the hair transplant procedure. Nevertheless, it typically takes 6-9 months to observe the majority of the results, and up to 12 months to witness the final outcome.

This timeline is due to the time needed for the newly grafted hair to adapt to its new position, establish connections with blood vessels, heal, and begin producing the keratin necessary for hair growth. While it may seem like an extended period, it is essential for the healthy development of the transplanted hair. Although individual cases may vary, 6-9 months is the generally accepted average time frame for most hair transplant patients.

DOES A HAIR TRANSPLANT HURT?

Hair transplant procedures are performed using local anesthetics, which prevent patients from experiencing pain during the process. Some individuals might feel mild pressure or discomfort, but in most instances, there is no pain during the procedure. Despite the operation taking several hours, continuous sedation and the presence of a professional team ensure a comfortable experience with minimal discomfort.

In the post-operative period, any pain experienced is typically minimal and can be managed with simple painkillers, such as Ibuprofen. Most patients may encounter mild pressure, slight swelling, and light discomfort for a week following the operation. However, these symptoms are expected and usually subside shortly afterward.
